Pregnancy

The United States still has the highest rates of teen pregnancy and births in the industrialized world.

Teen pregnancy costs the United States at least $9.1 billion annually.

Despite impressive declines in the teen pregnancy and birth rate for over a decade, the teen birth rate began to increase again in 2005.

About 1/3 of teen girls will become pregnant at least once by the age of 20. Teen pregnancy and birth rates vary among the three largest racial/ethnic groups:

  • 53% of Latina teens will become pregnant at least once before the age of 20.
  • 51% of African-American teens will become pregnant at least once before the age of 20.
  • 19% of non-Hispanic white teens will become pregnant at least once before the age of 20.

Less than 1/2 of all high school students have had sex.

Only 61.5% of sexually active high school students reported using a condom at last sex.

About half of all pregnancies in the United States are unplanned.

 Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)

1 in 4 teenage girls in the United States has an STI.

While 15 to 24 year olds represent only about 25% of the sexually active population, it is estimated they represent nearly 1/2 of all new cases of STIs.
